Why doesn't isopropyl alcohol remove sunscreen or sunblock stains?
Isopropyl alcohol works on many surface contaminants, but sunscreen and sunblock contain UV-filtering compounds like avobenzone, oxybenzone, and zinc oxide that don't dissolve in alcohol. These bond chemically to leather and vinyl at a molecular level. Alcohol may temporarily lighten the stain or spread it around, but it doesn't break the chemical bond — which is why the stain always comes back.
